Water
Blue spaces
Blue spaces are outdoor places shaped by water: oceans, beaches, bays, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, harbors, and similar environments.
BlueGreen Guide Explained
BlueGreen Guide brings water and land together because the way people experience the outdoors does not always fit neatly into one category.
Water
Blue spaces are outdoor places shaped by water: oceans, beaches, bays, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, harbors, and similar environments.
Land
Green spaces are natural or planted outdoor places such as parks, forests, gardens, trails, campgrounds, open spaces, and wildlife areas.
Blue and green spaces are different environments, but they often overlap. A lake may be surrounded by trails and parkland. A coastal park might offer a beach, walking paths, picnic areas, and wildlife viewing within the same visit.
BlueGreen Guide brings them together because outdoor discovery is often about the whole experience, not a single category or activity.
There is also a human side to these environments. Research has associated time in natural environments with psychological restoration, reduced stress, improved mood, physical activity, social connection, and aspects of attention and well-being. Researchers continue to study how these effects differ among people, environments, activities, and types of exposure.
Green spaces can provide vegetation, shade, wildlife, movement, and places to walk, gather, explore, or simply slow down. Blue spaces add another dimension through water and waterside environments, which can offer opportunities for recreation, physical activity, social connection, and restoration.
Not every person experiences every outdoor place in the same way, and BlueGreen Guide is not a wellness or health app. The simpler idea is that access to nature can matter, and finding an outdoor place that fits you can make getting outside easier.
Finding an outdoor place is often only the first step. You may know there is a lake nearby without knowing where to access the water. You might find a trail but not know where to park. A beach may look perfect on a map while leaving unanswered questions about restrooms, accessibility, amenities, or how far you will need to carry your gear.
That is the problem BlueGreen Guide is designed to help solve.
BlueGreen Guide began with paddleboarding and kayaking launch points, but outdoor discovery is bigger than any one activity.
The idea grew out of our own experience trying paddleboarding and kayaking for the first time. We knew where we could paddle, but that did not mean we knew how to actually get on the water.
At one beach we already knew well, we arrived to discover that parking was paid, extremely limited, and there was virtually nowhere nearby to stage our gear. What made the experience especially frustrating was that we had visited that beach many times before. We had seen paddleboarders and kayakers out on the water, but we had never known where they were launching from or how they were getting there.
The place wasn't difficult to find. The practical information needed to use it was.
That experience exposed a much broader problem. The same questions come up whether you are looking for somewhere to paddle, hike, walk, picnic, explore with your family, watch wildlife, or simply spend some time outdoors:
Where do I actually go? What can I do there? How do I access it? What should I know before I arrive?
That is why BlueGreen Guide is growing beyond launch points into a guide for outdoor experiences across both water and land.
Color never carries the meaning alone. Clear icons and labels help make the same information understandable to more people.
BlueGreen Guide is not about telling you how you should experience the outdoors.
It is about giving you better information so you can decide where you want to go, whether a place fits what you are looking for, and what to expect when you get there.
That is what we mean by Discover Better Outdoors.
The relationship between natural environments and human well-being is an active area of research. These resources provide additional background for anyone interested in exploring the subject further.
